This weekend was a nice bit of relief.  It was hot, but not oppressively humid.  Saturday Colin and Dad started the wheat harvest.  It’s going well, not great but he’s happy enough with the harvest.

The canning continues this week.  Hopefully it won’t be too hot.

I guess I shouldn’t have complained about the heat last week because yesterday was miserable and today is even worse.  The house/outside was already 77F/25C when I got up this morning at 7, of course it feels even worse because of the ridiculous humidity.

Happy Simcoe Day (or Civic holiday if you want to be ‘modern’).  As per usual, the Farmer is working on a holiday weekend.  In fact, it’s so hot that Colin got up at 5:30 to do this…

Some days we could really use a cherry picker.

They are trying to finish the outside work before it gets ‘too’ hot.

And of course, after days of stagnant weather, the wind picks today to start to blow (from the wrong direction).  I got roped into holding a corner (get it ‘roped’) while they tied down the sides.

Blah, look at the haze hanging over the fields.

Thank goodness for the pool, too bad you can’t work and sleep in it.

Look what Colin brought in for me last night.  The first tomatoes of the season.  This dry weather has not been good for the garden.

Wow, last week was crazy. I don’t have time to tell you about it today, but I guess you can look for that later in the week.  We continue to melt, though apparently today is the ‘coolest’ day we’re having -blah.  We did get a really good amount of rain and it’s saved the corn.  We still need more, but things aren’t so desperate.

Eastern Ontario continues to bake under this ridiculous heat and humidity.  It’s funny, we are crazy humid but the ‘rain’ clouds are so dry that we haven’t had one thunderstorm all month.  We had a wee bit of rain this weekend, but it didn’t even add up to an inch.  We are getting desperately dry and having flashbacks to the 2012 drought.  More worrying is the fact that all around the world farmers are crying for rain (on farmer facebook).  Food could get rather expensive this year if we don’t get good rains soon.

Auntie Belinda and Uncle Stefan were up on the weekend.  They treated us to a fabulous day at the Calypso water park.  Do you see that white slide on the left, the one that goes straight down?  My crazy fearless daughter went down that one 3 times!!  This one and this one are more my speed -guess I’m getting old.  The best part, in my opinion, is that they spoil us by renting a cabana.  That gives us our own private area out of the sun.  It comes with table and chairs and a fridge.  It even locks so you don’t have to worry about your stuff.

The view from our cabana, just steps from my favourite Jungle Run.

We don’t know where this kitty came from, but she’s been around the back door for a little while now.  She has 3 of the most adorable grey kittens.  They are all solid grey and one is extra fluffy.

With our company this weekend (and it being Uncle Stefan’s b-day) I made a beef roast in the crock pot on Saturday, so we’re eating a lot of that this week.

Tuesday:

ham sandwiches

hot beef (or a version thereof depending on how hot the house is)

Wednesday:

pizza on the BBQ

shepherd’s pie (I can cook in my toaster oven)

Thursday:

sandwiches

pork chops

Friday:

pizza

leftover shepherd’s pie

Saturday:

honey garlic chicken -from freezer maybe with sesame noodles (Pioneer Woman)

Sunday:

hamburgers

And now onto the knitting for Yarn Along and Crafting On.

Too hot for knitting, so not too much progress.  I’m done with the patterning (except for the odd row of eyelets).  Ha!  I just noticed Tim decided to get in on the picture.

I finished up Tales From Bow Street.  It was good.  It got a bit less interesting towards the end, but that’s to be expected when talking about modern crime instead of highway men!  Now I’m reading To Love, Honor, and Vacuum.  I’ve followed Sheila on her blog for a while and I found the kindle edition for free and thought I’d give it a try.  So far, I’m not so sure.

Send us some rain.

Oh my goodness, today was a miserable day for grocery shopping.  40C with the humidity.  I left early to avoid the worst of the heat.  The stores aren’t running their a/c much so it wasn’t that much of a relief either.  Everything got home OK, thanks to the cooler full of frozen bottles of water.  Luckily I didn’t need milk this week so I didn’t need to bring 2 coolers (another reason that winter is better).

Monday:

I made chicken on the weekend, so it was leftovers today with beans from the garden

Tuesday:

sandwiches -I’m canning beans so lunch will be whatever people find

baked chimichangas  -extras to go into freezer

Wednesday:

hot dogs

magic chicken casserole -baked in the toaster oven

Thursday:

sandwiches

leftover casserole

Friday:  Belinda and Stefan!!

KFC

Saturday:

slow roasted pork -done on the BBQ of course

Sunday:

Summer has definitely arrived in the Ottawa Valley.   The house did NOT cool off last night, so we woke to 24C.  At least is hasn’t gotten too humid in here yet -so long as you don’t move around much.  I think today might be a sewing day (under the ceiling fan).  I needed to bake cookies, so I woke early while the house was ‘cool’.

Likely going to be a busy week.  It’s our last Guide camp of the year.  We’re at the Pentecostal camp again this year.  I’m letting Ella stay home (well, Grandma’s) because she just doesn’t like camp and it’s too stressful when some of the other girls get too tired and get bitchy grumpy.  I’m having a hard time getting into this camp because the next weekend is our summer vacation and I want to get started on that instead.

Monday:

sandwiches

leftover Chinese (BTW the Pioneer Woman chow mein was yummy.  I added 1 tsp oyster sauce and used packaged coleslaw for all the veggies)

Tuesday:

sandwiches

tacos -happy Ella

Wednesday:

leftover tacos

BBQ chicken quarters

Thursday:

BBQ pizza

spaghetti and meatballs

Friday:

leftover pizza

BBQ pork chops
