It’s been a busy few weeks.

First we had Grandma’s 71st birthday.  My sister and brother-in-law came up for the weekend.

Last weekend was my birthday -48!!

I’m still getting used to the selfie function on my new phone.

Yeah, nothing to add…

I wish this one wasn’t blurry.  It’s so hard to get a good picture with Mom.

Why haven’t there been many Yarn Along posts lately?  Well, besides trying to keep the house ready for company, I’ve been busy finishing up Ella’s costume for Comic-Con in Ottawa.  Here she is with her friend Hannah.  Ella is a ‘gender bend’ Inuyasha.  That means we’ve taken a boy character and made it into a girl costume.  Inuyasha is one of her favourite anime.   Boy, did she get a lot of compliments and pictures taken -even the professional photographers wanted her picture.

I didn’t realize I forgot to get a good full-length picture of her.  We’re supposed to be going to the comic-con in Niagara Falls in June, so I’ll have to get a good one then.

Lots of cool things, as usual.  It was great to see my friend Teresa and all her beautiful things.  She makes the prettiest circlets, but Ella’s not little and doesn’t play princess anymore.

Gaming station where we could ‘take a load off’ check out some new games.  They could make a fortune if they had a “moms area” -you know; some comfy places to sit, have a drink, and still keep an eye on the kids.

So what’s up for this week?  Well, hopefully Colin can continue getting some cropping done.  He did some cultivating on the weekend.  We had a bit of rain today and since we have clay, it’s slowing things down.  Tonight hopefully the other home schoolers will show up and we can start filming their Shakespeare play.  Other than that, no real plans.

Monday:

Hamburger Helper -beef noodle, Ella’s favourite

Tuesday:

cracklin’ chicken

German potato salad and Parmesan cauliflower -two new recipes

Wednesday:

perogie

Thursday:

pork chops

Friday:

sweet and sour chicken

Saturday:

Not sure what to make on the weekend.  Hopefully, Colin will be too busy out in the field to stop for supper and I’ll just grab something easy.  Please God!  It’s getting late.

I almost forgot to show you the Mother’s day gift I bought myself at Comic-Con.  It’s the moon on the night Ella was born.  It glows in the dark too.  It’s a Canadian company called Moonglow.

Well, what to say about last week?  It’s definitely wet.  Colin thinks the water is up further in the field than any other year.  But it also seems to be going down in other places (like around the house -hurray!).  There is lots of flooding in Renfrew County this year.  The Trans Canada Highway west of Pembroke is even closed.  That means everyone (i.e., all the transports heading to Western Canada) is being re-directed all the way over to Eganville and up hwy 60 through Algonquin Park!  Glad we aren’t going that way.

Nothing too crazy planned this week.  Ella would like to hang out with her friends again, and Amanda needs some knitting help.  We’re also going to see a Shakespeare play at the local high school (the one Daddy attended).  Did I tell you that lately book club has been doing “A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream”?  Well, it just so happens that Opeongo High School is doing that play.  That should be fun.

I need to change my menu plan a bit from what I wrote down in March.  Belinda and Stefan are coming on the weekend for Mom’s birthday (71!).  Mom asked for roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, so that’s what I’m making on Saturday.  If they don’t go home on Sunday, I’ll be making another big supper.

Monday:

hot chicken

Tuesday:

chicken pot pie with garlic biscuits

Wednesday:

pork chops

Thursday:

leftover pot pie

Friday:

Chip Pit -oh yeah, I forgot to tell you the chip ‘truck’ in Cobden is finally open!!!!  Happy Daddy!

Saturday:

prime rib, mashed potatoes, corn, Yorkshire pudding (though it will be popovers), and cake

Sunday:

baked meatballs

Why or why can’t Mother Nature figure out that it’s supposed to be spring.  We still have snow.  It’s snowing this morning.  I am so ‘done’ with winter.

I have snowdrops flowering, crocuses are literally sprouting up through the snow, and even the bluebells are poking up.

The barn cats say it’s time for spring too.

Not too much planned this week.  Book club is moved to Tuesday evening, they are starting to work on their play now.  Ella’s “Hermia” from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.  They are doing a very short version that only needs 9 actors.

Monday:

baked sweet and sour chicken

Tuesday:

shake and bake pork chops

Wednesday:

garlic beef noodle bowls with homemade noodles

Thursday:

no peak chicken

Friday:   Good Friday

leftovers??

Saturday:

bacon and eggs and potato cakes

Well, what a difference from last Monday.  It’s raining today.  The water is starting to pile up in the yard.  Especially in the corner where the snow plow has been driving all over the grass all winter.  Colin figures he’s crushed the culvert -boo!  The basement is starting to get wet.  Must be spring.

Pretty quiet week planned here.  Need to get out Lenten garden set up (I know better late than never).  Maybe I can even start hanging the laundry outside??

Oh my goodness, the chicken pot pie from last week was delicious!  It was so good that Colin has asked for it to be on the ‘regular rotation’!!  You all know what a big deal that is, Colin and Ella never request food!

Monday:

Tuesday:

Salisbury steak meatballs

Wednesday:

chicken souvlaki

Thursday:

leftover meat balls

Friday:

smothered pork chops

Saturday:

No, this is NOT an April’s Fools day trick.  This is what we woke up to Sunday morning!  Actually, Sunday morning started at 5:30 when we woke up and realized the power had been off.  A look outside and Colin hurried out and had to shovel 2 feet of snow off the machine shed roof.  The power went out again which left him shoveling in the dark.  There’s about a foot of snow on the ground.  He then had to spend the afternoon blowing out everyone else’s driveways.  I sure wish some of Mom’s neighbours over in Beachburg would help out and do her driveway once in a while.

No real plans this week.  I’d like to get Ella together with her friend Landon in town because they might be moving very, very far away.  That’s going to break Ella’s heart because Landon is her best friend and her ‘knight in shining armour’ when the other kids suck.  They weren’t military so I didn’t see this coming.

I usually do my menu planning/grocery list for the month.  For some reason this weekend I just wasn’t ‘in the mood’.  I’ve only got about a week and a half worth of meals on the calendar.  Oh well, I’ll get in the usual sort of supplies and I’m sure we won’t starve.  I did make the roast chicken yesterday, though I managed to burn the dressing in the crock pot.

Monday:

beef dip -Ella really enjoyed these (so did I)

Tuesday:

hot chicken sandwiches

Wednesday:

chicken enchiladas -Pioneer Woman

Thursday:

chicken pot pie with garlic biscuits

Friday:

leftover enchiladas

Saturday:

leftover pot pie

Sunday:

slow cooker pork tenderloin

March continues to fly by, but winter refuses to leave.  Colin actually cancelled a cleaning job last week because it was too cold.  It’s still -10C today but that’s not so bad.  We even had snow yesterday.  Not much on the ground, but it snowed all. day. long!

I don’t think there’s anything too exciting this week.  There’s the homeschool fair on Friday, we might go to that if I can arrange a ride.  The menu got a little mixed up last week.  I was craving roast beef, so I made it earlier in the week than planned.  That means we have a few leftovers to get finished up.  I’ve got a couple of new recipes to try at the end of the week.

Edit: the home school fair presentation apparently involves food, so now my fridge is too full to do the chicken.  So now the menu needs to change for the rest of the week.

Monday:

leftover beef

Tuesday:

shepherd’s pie (with the leftover beef and gravy)

Wednesday:

roast chicken  oven fried chicken with honey mustard glaze

Colin and I just got back from a lovely weekend at our B&B again this weekend.  We decided to go out for his birthday, before he gets busy with seed cleaning.

We went to the Tavern for supper on Friday.  Colin had his usual ‘sledders special’ -prime rib hamburger and of course I had the cabbage rolls and perogie.  It’s a good thing Wilno is an hour way or we’d eat there far too often.  Joe and Carol surprised us on Saturday night with a small birthday party.  It’s so nice that our ‘hosts’ are friends as well.

Tomorrow is Ella’s birthday party.  Weather is supposed to be good, finally.  Busy day for me getting everything ready (sandwiches, snacks, and cake).

Monday:

garlic ranch chicken

Tuesday:

party!! -Colin gets what he can find at home  🙂

Wednesday:

leftover chicken

Thursday:

steak and fries

Friday:

off to Toronto, make some meals for Colin for the weekend.

Wow, March already.  The last few days we’ve been waking up to -20 C or so, but by the afternoon the temperature has been flirting with 0 C.  Can’t really complain though people around here have really been trying.  I’m not understanding all the ‘it’s not spring yet’, ‘stupid groundhog’ type comments I’ve been seeing on Facebook.  I read those and think to myself “um, it’s only February, in Ontario…”.  You don’t start expecting ‘spring’ until the middle of March (at the earliest) and you don’t start calling it late until well into April.  Somehow people have started to think the ‘early spring’ groundhog forecast means full spring in February.

Speaking of the ridiculously unpredictable February weather, we finally have Ella’s birthday party re-booked.  We found a date that works for all her little friends (hockey).  I may have to drive a pair of them but their Mom’s a doula and you can’t schedule babies -ha ha.

Oh yeah, Colin and I were out for a ride around the fields on the snowmobile yesterday.  It tipped me off (fell through trail and bad shocks apparently).  I stepped off the trail to wait for Colin to get things fixed.  I ended up thigh deep in the snow!!  There is so much snow out there in the fields you lose all perspective.  I had no idea it was that deep.  It also made getting back over to the trail difficult.

Ella and I had a good time at the homeschool evening.  Only a couple of Mom’s turned up, but 2 of her friends were there.  There was also a whole ‘herd’ of little girls (4 I think) and they quite took to Ella.  She’s never been ‘mauled’ by a herd of little girls and she loved it.  She’s usually the youngest at family gatherings and such.

It’s Colin’s birthday on Saturday.  We decided to take a weekend out at our favourite B&B before he gets busy cleaning and cropping.  Grandma and Ella will be here to ‘babysit’ the house/eggs/dog/cat.  So I’m going to be busy making food for the weekend and getting the house tidied up.

Monday:

beef noodle hamburger helper -Ella’s favourite (made with almond milk of course)

Tuesday:  Shrove Tuesday

pancakes -of course, doughnuts too if I get ambitious

Thursday:

Salisbury steak -whole meal in the crockpot

Friday:
