We had a great day yesterday visiting with Santa. I’m not sure what to do for our Advent celebration today. It’s St. Nicholas Day. I’m not sure what to do with Ella, I’m not sure how to explain it to Ella without confusing her. Today she’s at Grandma’s ‘helping’ paint her bedroom. Maybe that will be her treat for today and we’ll worry about St. Nick next year. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I’m going to start baking this week and so there’s nothing fancy on the menu. A couple new recipes, but nothing complicated.
Monday: dance night
crescent dogs
spaghetti
Tuesday: groceries
pb&h for Daddy
tacos
Wednesday:
pork chops & hot potato salad
Thursday: skating & knit night
sandwiches
steak sandwiches (Pioneer Woman)
Friday:
shepherd’s pie -new recipe
Saturday: OVFC delivery day
German apple pancakes -new recipe
Schweinepfeffer/Paprika pork stew -new recipe and likely served with mashed potatoes
Sunday:
sandwiches
leftover shepherd’s pie

We put out our stockings the night before with a carrot for the bishop’s horse. We also leave pictures or letters to Jesus for him to take back to heaven. In the morning, we open our stockings and find the gnawed carrot. There is always a bag of chocolate coins in the stockings because of the saint’s rescuing the sisters from being sold into prostitution by providing their dowries, and we tell the stories of him and ask the children why the coins are in there, etc. I also make filled cookies that are shaped like the children’s (and our) initials to eat with breakfast. We break the Advent fast to eat our treats on this day. We always have an orange, maybe satsumas/clementines, apples, peanuts, other nuts and a candy cane in their stockings. We put other things in depending on what we find. We like to put in little flashlights or LED lights, hair bows for the girls, little bath things. My husband loves maple candy, so I get those for him. We put dried fruit in as well, and maybe another food treat that we don’t often or usually have.
